Correct selection of electrodes and adherence to welding techniques and procedures constitute an important factor by design and manufacture of welded structures. Electrodes of every grade feature a complex of engineering, metallurgical and other properties and the full information on them enables experts to select a specific electrode grade in the most rational and qualified way with respect to a particular product by its design, manufacture or repair. For instance, selection of electrodes for welding steels of any structural grade starts with the choice of electrode coating, which determines engineering and metallurgical properties of electrodes and their applicability to welding of specific steel grades depending on the chemical composition and structure. At present, the unified generally accepted electrode classification system is not available. However, they are classified in compliance with the effective standards by purpose, mechanical properties and chemical composition of deposited metal (types), classes and thickness of coating, as well as by several welding and engineering features. In particular, electrodes are classified by purpose into:
1. stick electrodes,
2. hardfacing electrodes,
3. electrodes for maintenance and repair applications,
4. electrodes for cutting applications.
